According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a potential military operation aimed at removing approximately 1,000 pounds of enriched uranium from Iran.
The report notes that no final decision has been made yet, but Trump is showing a favorable stance toward the plan. Citing unnamed security officials, it states that such an operation could require U.S. forces to remain inside Iran for several days or even longer. The primary objective of this move is to ensure that Iran is permanently prevented from developing nuclear weapons.
Regarding official comments, BBC reported that inquiries have been made to the White House and the Pentagon.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that U.S. troops deployed in the Middle East could be used in an operation to seize highly enriched uranium stored at Iran’s Isfahan Nuclear Facility. In addition, they may also be assigned missions to capture the strategically important Kharg Island or to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier this month, the same outlet reported that the Trump administration had also been considering options to seize or destroy nuclear materials stored deep underground near Isfahan, possibly beneath mountainous terrain.
However, both media outlets cautioned that such a military operation would be highly complex and risky, with the potential to trigger significant geopolitical consequences.
In a separate interview with Financial Times, Trump indicated that he is also considering gaining control over Iran’s oil resources. He specifically highlighted the strategic importance of Kharg Island, suggesting that its capture is under serious consideration.
