Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense has announced that three drones which illegally entered the country’s airspace were successfully intercepted and shot down. The incident took place on Sunday (May 17) after the drones crossed into Saudi territory from Iraqi airspace, prompting the Saudi military to destroy them midair.
In an official statement, the Saudi Defense Ministry said the Kingdom would take strict action against any attempt to violate its sovereignty and national security. Riyadh also emphasized that it remains fully prepared to carry out all necessary operational and military measures to protect its airspace and borders.
Although regional tensions eased following the ceasefire linked to the Iran conflict last April, sporadic drone incidents targeting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other Gulf states from Iraqi territory have continued to occur. Sunday’s drone infiltration is being viewed as part of that ongoing pattern.
According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia has intensified its surveillance and defense measures in order to maintain regional security and stability amid the evolving situation.
