Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, concerns are growing over a potential new military confrontation between the United States and Iran. In a recent interview, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled the possibility of asserting control over Iran’s critical oil infrastructure, specifically mentioning Kharg Island—a site widely regarded as a cornerstone of Iran’s economy. He stated that the United States could choose to seize the island, though no final decision has been made, emphasizing that multiple strategic options remain on the table. However, he acknowledged that such an operation would likely require U.S. forces to maintain a presence on the island for a certain period. According to his assessment, the island’s defensive capabilities are relatively limited, suggesting it could be captured with relative ease.
Earlier in mid-March, Trump claimed that U.S. forces had already conducted strikes on various military targets on the island, while deliberately avoiding damage to energy infrastructure. Around the same time, multiple international reports indicated that Washington was considering the seizure of Kharg Island as a means of pressuring Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes daily.
Meanwhile, signs of U.S. military preparedness have also emerged. Officials from the Pentagon are reportedly preparing for the possibility of a ground operation, while the United States Central Command has confirmed the deployment of additional troops to the Middle East, further escalating tensions in the region.
Analysts warn that any attempt to seize Kharg Island would deal a severe blow to Iran’s economy, as approximately 90 percent of the country’s crude oil exports pass through terminals located on the island. Oil is transported there from the mainland via pipelines and loaded onto large tankers, which benefit from the island’s deep-water access—making it a vital hub in Iran’s energy export network rather than just a geographical location.
In response, Iran has taken a firm stance, with its leadership warning that any foreign military incursion into its territory would be met with strong resistance. Reports suggest that Iran has already reinforced the island’s defenses by deploying additional troops, air defense systems, and other military assets.
Security experts caution that while capturing the island could significantly weaken Iran’s economic and military capabilities, it would also heighten the risk of a broader regional conflict. Iran possesses advanced drones, missiles, and naval mines, which could be used in retaliatory strikes against oil facilities, commercial shipping, and critical infrastructure across the Gulf region.
Experts further warn that any direct attack on Kharg Island’s oil infrastructure could trigger a major shock in global energy markets, potentially sending oil prices soaring and causing prolonged economic instability worldwide. In retaliation, Iran could expand its attacks to include key energy installations across the Middle East, as well as essential infrastructure such as desalination plants—posing a direct threat to millions who depend on them for fresh water.
Overall, the escalating tensions surrounding Kharg Island are not merely a military issue but represent a significant threat to global energy security, geopolitical stability, and the world economy. The direction this crisis takes in the coming days remains a matter of deep international concern.
