The United States has made “significant progress” in its talks with Iran, claimed U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. He made the remarks during an interview on Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier.”
When asked whether further discussions would take place, Vance said the decision now lies with Iran. He also explained why the U.S. delegation left last week’s talks held in Pakistan. According to Vance, “The Iranian delegation present there was unable to reach an agreement. They needed to return to Tehran to get approval for the conditions we proposed. That approval must come from their supreme leader or other authorities.”
In the interview, Vance stated, “The biggest question now is whether the Iranians will show enough flexibility. Will they accept the key issues we need to finalize the deal?” He added, “Enriched uranium must be removed from Iran, and we must receive a firm commitment from them not to develop nuclear weapons.”
Vance believes that if Iran agrees to these conditions, it could lead to a very positive agreement for both countries. He also said the United States would be pleased to see Iran become a “normal” country. “If Iran behaves like a ‘normal’ nation, if its economy stabilizes and its people achieve growth and prosperity, we would truly welcome that. But to become economically normal, Iran must abandon its path toward nuclear weapons and stop supporting terrorism,” he said.
He further added, “I truly believe there is an opportunity for a major deal here. However, I think the next step now depends on the Iranians.”
Vance also noted that the United States expects Iran to take positive steps toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that failure to do so could shift the course of negotiations.
The U.S. leader said, “Control is in our hands. We have military superiority. By imposing restrictions on their oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, we are now applying additional economic pressure on them.”
