Amid the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning, stating that if an agreement is reached, the war with Iran and U.S. sanctions could come to an end, but if Iran refuses, bombing campaigns may intensify significantly; speaking on Wednesday (May 6) via his social media platform Truth Social, Trump cautioned that failure to agree to a deal would result in renewed strikes that would be far more severe and intense than before. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said that a U.S. proposal to end the war is still under review, with spokesperson Esmail Baghaei telling Iran’s ISNA news agency that the proposal remains under consideration and that Iran is exchanging views with Pakistani mediators regarding its terms. At the same time, both countries appear close to signing a one-page memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at ending the conflict, according to a Pakistani source involved in the peace process and two U.S. officials, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday (May 6). A report by U.S. outlet Axios also noted that President Trump has paused an operation aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a move that the White House believes could help facilitate a ceasefire agreement with Iran. The report added that the United States expects responses from Iran on several key issues within the next 48 hours; although nothing has been finalized yet, sources indicate that this is the closest both sides have come to reaching a deal since the conflict began.
