North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has recently asserted that the current global situation validates his country’s decision to retain its nuclear weapons. He emphasized that rejecting pressure and diplomatic assurances from the United States to abandon its nuclear program was the right course of action.
Speaking on Tuesday at the country’s parliament, the Supreme People’s Assembly, Kim strongly criticized the United States. He accused Washington of engaging in aggressive actions across different regions and fueling conflicts through state-backed strategies.
According to Kim, the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States clearly demonstrate that nations without nuclear capabilities are far more vulnerable to military pressure from global powers. In contrast, countries possessing nuclear weapons are better equipped to ensure their national security.
He further stated that North Korea is now an established nuclear power, and its status in this regard is irreversible.
Previously, former U.S. President Donald Trump had described Iran as a potential and imminent threat to the United States. However, just months earlier, he claimed that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been significantly weakened.
Analysts believe that the ongoing situation surrounding Iran has reinforced North Korea’s long-standing strategic outlook. Pyongyang continues to view nuclear weapons as its most effective means of defense and deterrence.
Kim’s remarks come at a time when the United States has signaled a renewed interest in reopening diplomatic talks with North Korea. Efforts are reportedly underway to revive negotiations that collapsed in 2019. South Korean leadership has also engaged in discussions with Washington regarding possible diplomatic strategies and coordination on North Korea’s weapons development.
However, Kim’s latest stance suggests that any future talks will differ significantly from previous summits. While he has not ruled out dialogue with Trump, he has made it clear that the United States must first recognize North Korea as a nuclear-armed state and abandon what he described as its “hostile policy” toward Pyongyang.
Notably, North Korea has recently conducted several advanced weapons tests. These include cruise missile launches from modern naval vessels and drills involving rockets capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
