Ukraine has strengthened its strategic presence in the Middle East by signing 10-year defense cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia and Qatar. At the same time, reports indicate that Russia is transferring advanced drone technology to Iran, signaling a parallel shift in regional military dynamics.
According to international media sources, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy finalized long-term defense agreements during his recent Middle East visit. He stated that these deals focus on joint production, technology sharing, and the establishment of defense manufacturing facilities in both partner countries. Ukraine is also expected to conclude a similar agreement with the United Arab Emirates in the near future.
Meanwhile, citing U.S. and European officials, reports suggest that Russia is actively engaged in discussions with Iran regarding the transfer of advanced drones. Intelligence sources indicate that these negotiations have intensified in recent weeks, and shipments may already be underway. Some assessments suggest that the drones could be transported via Azerbaijan, potentially disguised as humanitarian cargo.
It remains unclear whether these transfers are part of a single shipment or an ongoing supply chain. Notably, Russia has previously used Iranian-made Shahed drones in the Ukraine war and has since worked to enhance their capabilities.
The newer versions of these drones reportedly include advanced features such as decoy systems designed to confuse air defenses, jet propulsion, improved anti-jamming technology, enhanced surveillance cameras, radio communication links, artificial intelligence (AI)-based control systems, and even satellite internet integration.
Experts warn that such technological advancements could pose significant challenges for the United States and its allies. High-speed, jet-powered drones, in particular, are more difficult and costly to intercept, requiring sophisticated air defense systems that are not widely available in sufficient quantities.
Additionally, analysis of wreckage recovered in Ukraine has reportedly provided further evidence of ongoing technological collaboration between Russia and Iran.
