Amid the escalating tensions of the Iran-Israel war, a new diplomatic controversy has emerged in the Middle East over reports of a secret visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United Arab Emirates. According to a statement released by Netanyahu’s office on Wednesday (May 13), the Israeli leader had visited Abu Dhabi during the height of the regional conflict. However, the UAE immediately denied the claim, triggering widespread speculation and political debate across the region. The situation intensified further after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran had prior knowledge of Netanyahu’s alleged secret trip to Abu Dhabi. Issuing a stern warning to the UAE, Araghchi described any covert cooperation with Israel as “unforgivable.” In a post published on the social media platform X, he wrote, “Netanyahu himself publicly announced that he had visited the Emirates, although our security forces had informed our leadership about this long ago.” He further declared, “Hostility against the great people of Iran is a foolish game, and secret collusion with Israel will never be forgiven.” The Iranian foreign minister also accused regional actors of attempting to create further divisions in the Middle East through hidden alliances with Israel, warning that those involved would eventually face accountability. Meanwhile, the UAE has completely rejected the allegations surrounding Netanyahu’s reported visit. In an official statement, the Emirati Foreign Ministry said there was “no truth whatsoever” to the reports and emphasized that the country’s relationship with Israel is neither secretive nor informal. According to Abu Dhabi, all ties with Israel operate transparently under the framework of the internationally recognized Abraham Accords. The controversy comes against the backdrop of an intense regional war that erupted after a joint Israeli-American strike on Iran on February 28, an attack Tehran described as entirely unprovoked. The confrontation reportedly continued for nearly 40 days, pushing the Middle East to the brink of a wider regional conflict. During the war, Iran launched several retaliatory attacks targeting areas within the UAE, arguing that Abu Dhabi’s close ties with both Israel and the United States posed a direct threat to Iranian national security. Despite those accusations, the UAE maintains that its foreign policy is aimed at preserving regional stability and diplomatic balance. In its latest statement, the Emirati Foreign Ministry reiterated, “Our relationship with Israel is public, official, and conducted within the framework of the Abraham Accords. It is not based on secret arrangements or unofficial understandings.” It is worth noting that the UAE officially normalized diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020 under a US-brokered agreement known as the Abraham Accords. Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan later joined the same initiative. However, with the ongoing Iran-Israel confrontation and Tehran’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric, analysts warn that the Middle East may be entering a new phase of geopolitical instability, where diplomacy, covert alliances, and military escalation are becoming deeply interconnected.
