The United States and China remain two of the world’s largest trading partners, with trade between the two countries surpassing 500 billion dollars in 2025. However, tensions have increased following the start of the second term of President Donald Trump, as both nations imposed retaliatory tariffs on each other’s goods. According to Al Jazeera, the average effective U.S. tariff on Chinese imports currently stands at around 31.6 percent. In response, China has imposed multiple tariffs on American energy and agricultural products, including a general 10 percent tariff on all U.S. imports, alongside additional duties on selected products such as 11 percent on propane and ethane and up to 77 percent on beef. Despite the ongoing tariff war, the United States remains China’s largest trading partner, while China ranks as the third-largest trading partner of the United States after Mexico and Canada. In 2024, the United States imported goods worth 453 billion dollars from China, including 212 billion dollars in machinery and electrical equipment, 57.9 billion dollars in toys, furniture, bedding, and related products, and 31.9 billion dollars in textile products. During the same year, China imported 145 billion dollars’ worth of goods from the United States, mainly consisting of 30.8 billion dollars in machinery and electrical equipment, 24.1 billion dollars in energy, oil, and mineral-related products, and 18.2 billion dollars in chemical products. Although the tariff conflict continues, the strong economic interdependence between the two countries keeps their trade relationship one of the most significant pillars of the global economy.
